Finding a company with 40 years of outdoor experience can be a challenge. Many people get into landscaping and call themselves pros or experienced. I have one question for them, "Have you been in business for 40 years?"
In the late 70's, when Palm Beach County was being developed, the only two companies that existed were O'Hara and Commercial. Commercial has since run themselves into the ground or sold out but we are in it to win it. Our customers love our service and keep us alive and growing.
At one point we did every property in PGA National. We still have a few there but have since diversified. The days of high quality landscaping have come and gone. Tons of people are calling themselves landscapers and running prices into the ground. They lower the price and break the contract. Broken promises ruin properties and homes.
The life expectancy of a landscape company is about 5 - 7 years. They come in, slash the prices, ruin the property, and go out of business. O'Hara is built on quality and never breaks the contract. Our prices remain competative but never cheap. The low bidder is always the worst choice.
National Franchises have moved into the area. Let me tell you, they are a disaster. They come from other climates with no experience. They severely under bid contracts, run out of money during contract periods, and then reduce service, cut fertilizings, cut trimmings and mowings, destroying jobs, just to equalize their profits. Anyone can buy into a franchise, wear a fancy shirt, and call themselves a landscaper, but there is a lot more to it.
We wrote almost all contract specifications for landscaping in Palm Beach County. We were the only ones around when they were written. Our work methods have been passed on and copied through the years, but never duplicated. I guess having a degree from the University of Notre Dame makes the difference. - Copyright 2012 - Thomas J.
